A spicy Media Club podcast this week as Roger Bolton, now presenting the brilliant Beebwatch Podcast, and previously of Radio 4’s Feedback joins media writer and Channel 4 expert Maggie Brown on the sofa. It’s fair to say that they had a spirited discussion about the future of public service broadcasting!
We also talked about the Gregg Wallace implosion and the role of production companies and broadcasters in this, and sadly similar scandals.
In the second half of the show, co-founder of World of Wonder Fenton Bailey jets in from LA to talk about the global success of their format Ru Paul’s Drag Race and we discuss why drag artists were the original content creators. We also talk about their own streaming service, the differences between UK and US production, why cable won’t go away and Ru Paul’s Drag Con which is coming to London in January. We also hear how a researcher described Adam Buxton’s showreel before it was plucked from the ‘no’ pile.
Fenton also talked about following the John Smythe abuse story and how he’s been thinking of turning it into a documentary.
All that, plus a quiz based on the 90s TV show Press Gang!
I always love the variety of topics and guests that we have on The Media Club and I’m grateful for the time people give to come on. I think we cover a lot this week!
